Description

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Java Game

So it's a bit of a problem to find Johnny Depp's Captain Jack at the center of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. If you want to burden your movie from the outset, give it a protagonist who can't grow, can't change, can't feel and wants nothing. Then give Depp total license to mug his way out of this confinement. Worse, give him scenes opposite Geoffrey Rush, who not only plays a pirate but one with a peg leg (oh no: unfair advantage!), and let them compete to see who can give the more grossly narcissistic and uninhabited performance. Depp wins, but its close.

Yet, for all this misery, this is by no means the worst of the Pirates movies. Director Rob Marshall (Chicago) may be too cowed by the success of the previous installments to try anything radically new, but he tries in the face of a of almost willful ineptitude - to impose something approaching coherence. He also has the advantage of working with Penlope Cruz and Ian McShane, who approach the movie as an acting job and not as a chance to flounce and preen. They're not at the center of the movie, but they're just off-center, and they help.

If you see the movie, watch Depp and Cruz in their scenes together and note the difference. Unlike Depp, Cruz listens. Her focus is complete. And she finds an emotional through line, amid the tangle of the story; to give wholeness to the woman she plays. Angelica (Cruz) wants to find the Fountain of Youth. She wants it, not for herself, but for her father, Blackbeard the Pirate (Ian McShane), who is not a very nice person. So her motivation is love, with the complication that she might be in love with Captain Jack, as well. But her loyalty is to her father. That's what Cruz plays - every moment she is on screen.

Blackbeard's loyalty is to himself. Single-minded and ruthless - something McShane can play as well as anybody - he wants the Fountain for the usual reason. He doesn't want to die. So that's what McShane plays.

Actually, a search for the Fountain of Youth might have been a strong organizing principle for the whole movie. It could have motivated Captain Jack, either out of a desire to live forever or out of desire to control the Fountain, with all the power that might bring. But no, that would be too clear-cut. Instead the movie has Captain Jack in search for the Fountain ... for no reason. He is without motive. Moreover, he keeps doing things against his own interests and against the interests of people who are on his side - again, for no reason. This isn't absurdity. This is nonsense - and it's as boring as nonsense.

The action scenes are dull, because you know who can't get killed: "Hold your fire! I want him alive!" These scenes are even a little creepy, because Captain Jack is going around killing people without need or purpose. The dialogue interludes are worse, because they're static: The conversations almost invariably consist of characters explaining themselves or congratulating themselves for being themselves. Nothing happens. Nothing!

Still, the new Pirates are not all torture. There is a whole interlude involving mermaids that is eerie and unsettling, a vision of monstrous allure and devouring s exuality. I wonder what Freud would have thought.

And as long as Cruz and McShane are on screen, there is some humanity and emotional truth in the vicinity. Take it when you can get it.
